I wanted to share a quick reminder that our Speech Up! Video Contest for U.S. high school students is still open for submissions and provide a little inspiration from Malala Yousafzai, author of I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World.
Reminder: Speech Up! Video Contest Deadline Extended
Keeping Students Connected to Learning
Just like everyone else around the world, Mali Rising staff and students have had to make a lot of “pivots” over the last year. Although that term may be over-used these days, it remains a central part of our new reality. Flexibility has become our new core skill, as closed schools and other problems challenge attempts to keep children learning. As part of our pivoting, we have developed and distributed take-home workbooks that allow our students to stay connected with learning and language during their extended break.
Deadline Extended for Speech Up! Video Contest
Big news! Due to helpful input from our Youth Ambassadors, we are extending the submission deadline for our Speech Up! Video Contest to March 31, 2021 at midnight eastern. Our Ambassadors explained that this crazy year means many students are scrambling right now with college applications, and we do not want to add any stress to this year!

Calling All Teachers: Engage Your Students in Speech Up!
We know it is a hard and strange year for teachers everywhere. Here in the U.S., I know so many teachers who are working double-time — developing online engagement strategies, duplicating lessons for both in-classroom and online, and/or facing worries about COVID-19 infection in their classrooms. We see you teachers! All of this may make this a good year for teachers to consider incorporating our Speech Up! video contest into your curriculum.

Welcome to the 20/21 Class of Youth Ambassadors
We Were Overwhelmed With Great Youth Ambassador Applications!
By Merritt Frey, Executive Director
Okay, this isn’t the most substantive blog post ever…but I had to share my excitement. Last week was the deadline for 20/21 Youth Ambassador Project participants and we had SUCH an amazing batch of applicants.
In fact, our applicants were so outstanding we could not bring ourselves to limit the group to just ten Ambassadors. Katie Murphy, Mali Rising board member and Youth Ambassador liaison, and I just could not say no to many of the great kids who applied. As a result, the 20/21 Ambassador class will be nearly double the normal size!
Stay tuned to hear more about the new Ambassadors in the coming week. And we predict you will be hearing A LOT about their great projects all school year long! So exciting.
